What is the Stop Conversion Practices Knowledge Centre?
Stop Conversion Practices is a knowledge and research-sharing initiative designed to facilitate the exchange of information on conversion practices. It has been created by survivors and informed by research and consultations with survivors, helping to ensure it is grounded in lived experience.
What is the purpose of Stop Conversion Practices?
- To raise awareness and increase knowledge and understanding of conversion practices and their impact on queer, trans, and Two-Spirit people in Canada today, and
- to provide information about the federal criminalization of conversion “therapy” practices in Canada.
Who is Stop Conversion Practices for?
Stop Conversion Practices was developed primarily for practitioners and service providers working with 2S/LGBTQIA+ people, and also aims to inform efforts to end conversion practices and to support survivors of these harmful practices in Canada. In addition, it is intended for survivors of conversion practices, their family and friends, and anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of conversion practices.
Who We Are
Stop Conversion Practices was developed by the Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC) in partnership with No Conversion Canada and through consultations with survivors and an Advisory Committee comprised of survivors and service providers from different sectors. CBRC staff leading this work are survivors of conversion practices, helping to ensure that this project is grounded in lived experience. The Sex Now Survey first asked about the prevalence of conversion “therapy” in the 2011-2012 survey.
Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC) is a national non-profit organization led by and for people of diverse sexualities and genders in Canada, with all staff, board members, and program participants identifying as 2S/LGBTQIA+.
CBRC’s research principles and the following research projects inform the Stop Conversion Practices initiative:
- the Sex Now Survey
- the SOGIECE∕CT Survivor Support project
- Understanding Experiences of Conversion ‘Therapy’ Practices among BIPOC, Immigrant, Newcomer and Refugee 2SLGBTQ+ People
- Public Legal Education and Information project about conversion practices and the federal law on conversion “therapy”
